Kwame Opoku is set to sign a €300,000 contract with Algerian club USM Alger in the coming days, and Kotoko will need to find a replacement.

Asante Kotoko were linked with King Faisal talisman Kwame Peprah to replace departing Opoku, but the Inshallah Boys, who are fighting relegation, are unwilling to sell their goal-poacher, whom they believe can save their season, and Kotoko has now turned their attention to Welbeck Takyi.

Takyi, 20, has been scoring goals for the Real Hunters in Zone One of the Ghana Division One League this season, and CK Akonnor has called him up to the Black Stars squad, which has been reduced to 24 players ahead of AFCON qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.

In eleven games for the Green and Whites, the lanky and deft attacker has nine goals and three assists in the country’s second-tier league.

The versatile forward has previously played for B.A United, Berekum Chelsea and RAK Club (United Arab Emirates).

“They had a good campaign and without a doubt, they have quality players. In the Premier League, they held us to a goalless game at the Accra Sports Stadium, and in Bechem, we played a 1-1 draw.

“But this is the FA and many have touted Bechem United to win the trophy because they are on good form. We are underdogs and we are fine with that but I believe the players will prove their critics wrong on Sunday.
