Legal practitioner and Senior Vice President of Imani Ghana, Kofi Bentil, has insisted that the punishment meted out to Rosemond Brown alias Akuapem Poloo is not commensurate with the crime( a misdemeanor) she was convicted for, stressing that the legal system which handed her the unfair punishment must be allowed to correct itself and punish her fairly.

Akuapem Poloo, who pleaded guilty to three charges – publication of obscene materials and engaging in domestic violence namely conduct that in any way undermine another person’s privacy and integrity and engaging in domestic violence namely conduct that detract from another person’s dignity and worth as a human being – was convicted and given a three-month jail term by the Accra Circuit Court.

But Mr Bentil has maintained that the sentence is way too harsh and a milder punishment should have been handed her. For some, Mr Bentil’s opinion is unjustifiable.

But he has insisted that even though he doesn’t support what she did, her punishment is harsh, adding that those in support of the harsh punishment must remember the golden rule.

“Let’s be clear, No one supports what Poloo did.  What we are saying is that the punishment does not fit that misdemeanor and the child is made worse off by the imprisonment of his mum.

Fortunately the same legal system allows a review by way of Appeal and that is going on.  I hope that corrects the problem. Let’s all allow the system to corrects itself.

Let the golden rule of all religions apply which is to do onto others as you would want them to do to you,” he said.

Lawyers of Akuapem Poloo are appealing her sentence at the Accra High Court, praying the court to hand her a noncustodial sentence instead of the jail term. The lawyers also want the Court to grant her bail as soon as possible pending the final determination of the matter.
